You see, strange things do occur. Very strange things.
Believe it or not, there are presence of deities, the supernatural, voodoo or what many may consider dark magic.
This evening, In the middle of a conversation with my mom, I happened to mention something I have heard for the umpteenth time; something, I've never mustered the courage to believe.
I heard this occurrence first, as a growing boy from my father, but i did not make much sense of it. Then, my best friend.
Then, from random strangers, whom I quickly dismissed as conspiracy theorists and laughed at these theories in private.
My father once told me that it was a popular occurrence in most villages for people to invoke the dead to kill the living. Normal people like you and me.
Infact, He told me as that as a growing teenager and young adult, they heard stories and experienced these things play out, first hand.
Like this, someone could go to the grave of your late father or mother, perform some incantations, pour libations and invoke their spirit to come kill you - the offspring.
So, it was/is still strongly believed that a good number of people have died from this.
What is popularly believed and peddled, is that, when this is done, some of these offsprings, die in their sleep. After battling whom they earlier believed to be a familiar and friendly spirit (maybe a father, mother, grandfather, grandmother), but who ended up being hostile to them and who tried so hard to take their life in what many describe as a trance, not a dream.
This is considered a usual occurrence amongst extended families most especially, where there is a boundary dispute, a land dispute or dispute of authority or ownership.
There are also rumors that say, that this could also happen between a brother and a brother in a monogamous setting, or even a brother and a sister, and that - if one brother or sister, quickly runs to the grave of their late parents to cry and lament, and call on them to exact vengeance, this could awaken their dead spirits to take the life of the accused.
This is why it is now advised, that if a brother you are at war with, or someone you have conflict with, goes to the grave of your parent, grandparent, or a loved one, whom you shared some bond with to cry or pour libations, you must quickly act by going to their grave as well, to talk to the dead spirit of your father, mother, grandfather or whomever, they may have invoked, to avoid the aftermath of that action, which may be disastrous.
These are some of the things they say, can be said :
" Call them by their name, ------, I am your child, you took in and carried me for nine months, suffered the pain of child birth/ training me, and left me when I needed you here, someone cannot call you now, after all we have been through, while you were alive, to come and kill your own child, grandchild, son or daughter. I am your flesh and blood, and I am here to remind you that you cannot take your own flesh and blood. Return penance to those who come here, by going after them. They cannot live while they call on you to take your own children. Abomination!! Hear me now! Hear me!''
Many believe that this allows the spirit to return to self awareness, since it is believed that spirits could be possessed and controlled by humans, to perpetrate evil, even against their own flesh and blood.
